Mission Statement
TO PROVIDE SAFE, RELIABLE, AND AFFORDABLE WATER AND SANITARY SEWER SERVICE TO THE RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES, AND INDUSTRIES IN THE SERVICE AREA THAT FOSTERS A CLEAN AND HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMIC VITALITY, AND ENHANCED QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS
MWAA Drinking Water System

The MWAA water system currently serves 6,615 customers within the City of Aliquippa and portions of Hopewell Township, Potter Township and Raccoon Township.
The primary source of raw water is provided from five (5) vertical wells and two (2) collector wells located along the west bank of the Ohio River with a total pumping capacity of approximately 7.75 MGD. In addition to the wells, there is an emergency interconnect with the Center Township Water Authority’s system on Brodhead Road.
The treatment plant has a rated capacity of 4,000 gpm, or 5.76 MGD, and consists of partial iron and manganese removal, softening and disinfection. The total amount of potable water storage is 9,178,000 gallons via six (6) reservoirs.
- Davidson Heights – 1,078,000 Gallon Concrete Reservoir
- Davidson Heights – 2,300,000 Gallon Steel Reservoir
- Davidson Heights – 2,500,000 Gallon Glass-Lined Steel Reservoir
- Sheffield Terrace – 2,000,000 Gallon Steel Reservoir
- West Aliquippa – 1,000,000 Gallon Glass-Lined Steel Reservoir
- Raccoon Twp – 300,000 Gallon Steel Reservoir
The distribution system consists of approximately 82 miles of water main ranging in size from 2-inch to 16-inch in diameter, 900 isolation (gate) valves and 450 hydrants for fire protection. In addition, there are three (3) booster stations, eight (8) pressure regulating valve stations and one (1) altitude valve station.
The water system is aging and the condition of the system is commensurate with its age. Repairs are made as required to maintain service and stop leaks.
MWAA Sanitary Sewer System

The MWAA sewer system currently serves 5,321 customers within the City of Aliquippa and portions of Hopewell Township.
The treatment plant has a hydraulic design capacity of 3.4 MGD and maximum wet weather hydraulic capacity of 7.0 MGD. The plant discharges treated effluent to the Ohio River under NPDES Permit No. PA0025968).
The collection system consists of approximately 52 miles of sewer main ranging in size from 6-inch to 24-inch in diameter and 1,200 manholes. In addition, there are six (6) pump stations within the service area that currently contribute flow to the treatment plant. One (1) of the pump stations is owned and maintained by Hopewell Township.
The collection system is considered a separate sewer system and is relatively old. Its condition is commensurate with age. The system primarily consists of vitrified clay pipe and is subject to inflow and infiltration during wet weather. Repairs are made as required to minimize surcharging conditions in the system and prevent basement backups.
