Source Water Protection

After hosting a public forum in November 2015, the MWAA successfully applied for inclusion in the Department of Environmental Protection’s (PaDEP’s) Source Water Protection Technical Assistance Program (SWPTAP).

A Steering Committee was set up, consisting of municipal officials, local industry, educators, local environmental organizations and other community members, and tasked with the actual development of the Source Water Protection Plan with assistance from PaDEP and its consultant, SSM Group, Inc.

A Kick-Off Steering Committee meeting was held during the afternoon of September 12, 2016.  At this meeting, PaDEP and SSM Group, Inc. provided a full overview of the project, the responsibilities of the Steering Committee, the project deliverables and expected timetable. They also reviewed the SWP Area Delineation and the draft Potential Sources of Contamination (PSOC) Inventory.

On May 11, 2017, PaDEP approved the Source Water Protection Plan for the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa.  Copies of the Plan are available for review at the Authority’s office at 160 Hopewell Avenue, Aliquippa, PA  15001 by contacting the office at (724) 375-5525 during normal business hours to schedule an appointment.

The Steering Committee is also tasked with meeting annually to review and plan and update as necessary.  If anyone from the service area is interested in volunteering their time on the Committee, please contact the office and provide contact information.
